Welcome to the
Long Island Artificial Reef Society
Building Affordable Housing for Marine Life Around Long Island
Definition of Artificial Reef
An Artificial Reef is a human-engineered, environmentally verified underwater structure deployed deliberately on the seafloor. Constructed from dense, durable substrates or repurposed maritime vessels, it mimics natural glacial and coral formations—providing substrate for encrusting organisms and establishing protective nursery habitat for fish, crustaceans, and marine wildlife.

About Us
Our 2021 inception, Governor’s Reef Initiative transition, seafloor colonization timeline, and mission.
Types of Reefs
Continuous formations vs. isolated Patch Reefs, glacial deposits, and long-range eon evolution.
Artificial Reefs
Materials vs. sunken vessels, 150+ year longevity factors, storm dynamics, and spacing rationale.
Patch Reef Materials
DEC-inspected precast concrete, Jersey barriers, Reef Balls®, clean steel, and vessel candidates.
Reef Projects
Active deployments: F/V Prudence Ferry, Manna Fish Farm Buoy, S/V Red Cloud, and future sites.
Donate & IRA QCD
Direct tax-exempt giving: Cash, Check to Farmingdale Box 3403, Zelle, or IRA Mandatory Distributions.
Volunteer & Land
Staging land, vessel conversion hands-on labor, and reporting industrial demolition debris leads.
Links & Outreach
Sponsors, major donors, reference materials, social channels, and direct contact dispatch.
Our Marine Mission
Following the conclusion of the Governor's Reef Initiative in 2021, the Society was founded to establish an independent civic framework for reef creation around Long Island.
Active Fleet Conversions
From the historic 1952 F/V Prudence Ferry to the automated Manna Fish Farm Buoy and S/V Red Cloud, learn about our active conversion projects.
